Dog Breeds: In the significant approach to curb rising instances of fatal dog attacks across the country the central government had instructed all respective state governments to impose an immediate ban on the import, sale and breeding of 25 breeds of dogs deemed “ferocious” and dangerous to human life after the expert committee constituted by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Ministry of Agriculture. The panel had decided after the growing concerns and complaints from citizens’ groups and animal welfare organizations against the rising human-animal conflicts mainly in metro cities, in which Rottweilers and pit bulls had topped the List of Banned Breeds of 2024. For the preparation of this list, the panel added recommendations from various stakeholder groups like veterinarians, animal behaviour experts, animal welfare organizations, municipal authorities and citizens’ groups.
